My dogs love playing with soft toys but unfortunately they don’t last long in our house. Within 20 minutes the toy is shredded and there is stuffing everywhere! So I’m always on the hunt for cute and inexpensive toys. At dog class the other night, our instructor was showing us a great toy that she made from fleece material. You simply cut the fleece fabric into strips and braid the strips. What a terrific and inexpensive idea!
I went to JoAnn’s and bought 1/3 yard of fabric. Then cut the fabric into strips using my rotary cutter and cutting board. You can use scissors if you don’t have rotary cutter. In fact, it’s okay if your strips don’t have perfectly straight edges since they blend in when braiding them.
Here are some guidelines for measurements. You can use 3″ wide strips for a small dog, 4″ for medium dog and 5″ for a larger dog. I made one with 4″ strips and another with 5″ strips.
Simply knot at the top and then start to braid.
Here’s a closeup of the braid.
It makes a nice tug toy for your dog and the fleece fabric has a lot of give. This is a special toy that I play with my dogs and then I take it away when we are done playing.
Our instructor suggested a game called crazy sits. It’s where I play tug with my dog and we get all wild and crazy. Then I take the toy away and then she has to sit in front of me. When she sits nicely, the reward is to play again. It teaches your dog to be able to control their behavior in the middle of crazy play time. Perfect for young dogs like my Ellie!
Here are some tips on how to teach your dog to play tug-of-war by the SPCA.
